City Spotlight: Florence
Ciao Bella! Welcome to Florence, a true hub of Italian culture and the birthplace of the Renaissance! While it’d be impossible to explore all of Florence in just one visit, we’re here to highlight a few of the essentials for your first trip to Florence!
Arrival
The capital of Tuscany, Florence is located in central Italy. Visitors to the city can fly in and out of Florence’s Peretola Airport, also known as Amerigo Vespucci Airport (FLR), located approximately 20 minutes from the city center. The city center is accessible by taxi or the T2 tram.
Traveling from somewhere else in Italy? Florence is easily accessible via train from many major Italian cities including Rome or Pisa. Trains regularly arrive and depart from Florence’s Santa Maria Novella train station.
Experience & Explore
Florence is home to so much incredible culture and history! Those looking to admire some of the world famous artworks of Florence should pay a visit to the Uffizi Gallery (home to Botticelli’s Birth of Venus) or Galleria dell’Accademia di Firenze (home to Michelangelo’s David). It’s important to note that both locations require tickets, which can be purchased in advance.
When most people think of Florence, they picture the iconic cupola of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, or simply the Duomo! The cathedral itself, along with its accompanying bell tower, are a popular tourist attraction. While the cathedral can be accessed for free, visitors must purchase tickets for entry to the dome, bell tower, baptistery, and terraces.
Looking for something to do in Florence that won’t break the bank? Take a stroll along the Ponte Vecchio, a shop-lined medieval bridge spanning the Arno river, and Florence’s only bridge that survived WWII. Across the bridge, visitors can explore Piazzale Michelangelo, a popular spot for watching the sunset and home to the best views of the city!
Dine
Italy is known for its incredible cuisine, and Florence is certainly no exception! While everything the city has to offer is delicious, there are a few regional dishes that visitors should be sure to try! Probably the most iconic meal the city has to offer is the traditional Florentine steak, served of course with a large glass of Chianti! Other dishes to try include an affogato, which is thought to have originated at Florence’s Vivoli Gelateria, and sandwiches served on schiacciata, a traditional Tuscan bread!
