Flying Internationally

For many people the idea of flying can be daunting, and even more so when it comes to travelling internationally. The good news is that boarding an international flight is much easier than it seems, especially if you come prepared.

Know what you need:

No matter where you are jetting off to, it is essential that you have a passport when travelling internationally. Many airlines require that your passport be valid for at least six months following your return flight, so be sure to double check the expiration date!

While a passport is universally required for international travel, other required documentation varies by destination. Common required documents often include a visa for your destination country or proof of a return flight.

It is also important to consult the health advisory information for your destination. For some destinations, certain vaccines or other medical interventions may be recommended before visiting. Additionally, be sure to check for any restrictions that may be placed on prescription medications entering your destination country.

There is a lot to be aware of when visiting another country, and a lot of this information is subject to change. Make sure to do your research and consult your travel advisor well in advance to get all the relevant information for your trip.

At the airport:

When it comes time to head to the airport for your international flight there are a few details that differ from other flights you may have taken. It is recommended that you arrive 3-hours early for an international flight. This is due to the more extensive check-in process as well as the longer boarding periods for international flights.

If your travel day includes a layover, there are a few things you should make sure to prepare for ahead of time. When booking your flight, it is advised that you have at least 2-hours for all layovers when travelling internationally. Depending on where your layover is, you may need to collect and recheck your luggage or go through customs during your layover.
